Before founding SOPHISTANCE, Len Kawahara was a novelist and screenwriter. While researching the screenplay for HOKUSAI, a biographical film about the legendary Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, she became fascinated by an old account describing how Hokusai recovered from a stroke with a homemade remedy made from fermented rice and yuzu.
Curious about the wisdom behind it, Len recreated the recipe and began using it herself. After years of persistent skin concerns, she experienced a remarkable change that transformed not only her skin, but also her understanding of beauty.
Driven by curiosity rather than trends, she traveled across Japan to learn from master brewers and artisans who had preserved generations of fermentation knowledge. Their craftsmanship inspired the creation of HACCO® Ferment Extract, SOPHISTANCE's proprietary signature ferment.
